Hmm. I wasn’t having any problem with crashing. But I was hearing some disk thrashing, which I thought was Time Machine backing stuff up and well, a Windows machine, ironically, would probably have given me many many errors before the drive died. I think I’ve had the iMac since late 2007 I think.

Do you have an Apple Store near you? If so, make an appointment with the genius bar. They’re really great.

I was going to answer on Twitter, but figured I’d do better with unlimited characters.

My iMac has crashed like 6 times now. I go to wake it out of sleep mode, and it’s all frozen, so I’d reboot and then I’d get the spinning gear. I was able to get it working again by reinstalling the OS, but that’s only lasting a limited time before the cycle starts again. At first, I didn’t think it was the hard drive because I could get it working again, but now I’m thinking it must be the drive because this is not normal and, like you, I’m getting errors when I try to repair the drive.

And I’m not ready to replace the desktop. I usually run them about 8 years because I do the vast majority of everything on my laptop. I’ve never had a PC give me this much grief unless you count Windows ME. But once I replaced that OS, it ran fine.

Despite all this, I’m still love Mac. Go figure.
