Poll Results – An Analysis

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Well. As of this morning, Batman is winning the Batman vs. Superman hot sex poll with Alexander Skarsgard coming in second. (Well played, poll responders!).  The comments were illuminating and included such choices as Thor, Wonder Woman (woot!) The Green Lantern and more. On twitter someone said she’d go shopping with Aquaman. Also, I think I didn’t mention that this controversy arose when I tweeted this:

Just realized something upsetting. If given a choice between hot sex with batman or superman, I would choose superman. Why? **sob**

By all means if you haven’t voted yet, please do!

Photomontage or How I know Spring is Coming

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Here in Sonoma County we just don’t get much snow. Like, supposedly, ever. But we woke up this morning to the picture below, which I took from our deck. Some fellow twitters reminded me how lucky I am to live in a house with a view like this. Sometimes I take it for granted. After that are some other pictures I took. If the plum trees are blooming, spring really is on its way.

Thoughts About Egypt

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Egypt

I listened to the speeches given by Egyptian president Mubarak and his VP Suleiman and was beyond disappointed. In fact, I got so mad I wanted to head over the Tahrir Square myself and join the civil disobedience. All those two men did was prove the demonstrators are justified in their anger and demands for justice. The video footage of Tahrir Square was electrifying, to say the least. I was distressed to hear NPR interview two men, one of them was Zbigniew Brzezinski and I forget the other guy, but both their opinions seemed — fossilized and uninformed. They couldn’t possibly have watched any of the Al Jazeera footage or paid any attention to Wael Ghonim when CNN interviewed him, for example. Both suggested that Mubarak was better for stability than the Muslim Brotherhood which they equated with extremism. (Can you say Fear Mongering?) As if that were 1) correct in any respect and 2) the only choice. Furthermore, I’m offended that anyone would come onto an American news program and suggest the US should support a dictatorship at the very time that tens of thousands and quite possibly millions of that country’s citizens have risen up to say No More.

There are at least two candidates who could creditably step into Mubarak’s place, since Suleiman’s patronizing and threatening speech effectively ended any chance he’d be tolerated as legitimate change. The first is Mohammed ElBaradei and the other is Wael Ghonim himself.

My hopes and thoughts are with the Egyptian people.

Thoughts? Opinions? Agree or disagree? Have at it in comments if you feel so moved.

Some Thoughts

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

I’d been planning a much different post, but the events in Arizona make anything I would have said feel trite. There are a great many facts we don’t know about what happened and why so it seems premature to say anything about what should have, could have or might have been done to prevent the tragedy.

My heart goes out to the families of all those who lost a loved one, and I will continue to hope that Congresswoman Giffords and everyone else injured recover.

Rounding out The Week, plus a request

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

I don ‘t know whether I’m more excited about Christmas or the fact that I have two days off and therefore Wednesday (tomorrow, as I write this) is a Friday equivalent. I realize that is pathetic, but that’s how things are rolling here. Tomorrow I have to get up at 4:15 am, but not again until Monday. Bliss.

Am revising something but staying on track plotwise with The Next Historical, although panic is sneaking up on me. Or breathing down my neck more like. I also have another thing to get ready to go out the door which I will do . . . uh . . . soon. Really soon. It is an erotic thing and provided I pull it off (no laughing!) I should have a link for brave souls sometime next week.

announcement

I am putting off mailing prizes until after the Christmas Holiday maddness, OK? Things should go out Monday.

Request (Puppy Eyes)

I have to write this article in re True Blood and it involves this: Shortlist: Celebs I would Date and if you have some time, it would be awesome if you could check out the list I made, vote, maybe comment and let me know, if you are so moved, what you thought.

And now I’m off to write fiction words.

Why I love Holiday Shopping

Friday, November 26th, 2010

I’ve always loved shopping for gifts for others. I love asking myself what person X would like and then finding it. A family member who shall remain nameless was in the opposite habit. There is a bit of psychology involved in this person’s gifting in that she is, alas, unable to buy things for herself. The more she wants something the less able she is to purchase it for herself. To find out what she would like, it’s only necessary to pay attention to the inappropriate gifts she gives to others. Wooden tulips intended to be put in the ground for an apartment dweller? Check. A two foot tall statue of a rooster for someone with no expressed interest in such a thing? Check.

This experience taught me, quite early in life, to think about things the giftee would like. I am, it also happens, in a happier place psychologically speaking, than my unnamed family member. This tends to make my gift-giving less fraught. Over the last 3-4 years, I’ve instituted a Christmas fund policy that has removed all financial angst from my holiday shopping. I get paid on the 15th and the last day of the month. I take out X amount of cash on payday and that has to last me until the next payday. That cash pays for everything except groceries and gas. When payday comes around, all the money that’s left in my wallet goes into the Christmas fund. I typically have a very tidy sum at the end of the year — I’m not talking gobs, but I know what I have to spend for my holiday shopping for my son, nephew, nieces, parents, my sister and close friends, and I can budget accordingly.

In our family, we don’t buy gifts for the adults, which reduces the expenses. We only buy for the kids and grandparents. I make an exception for my sister because she’s so wonderful with my son. She’s usually the one who takes him shopping for birthday and holiday gifts for me, for example. And that’s in addition to the time she spends with him. We’re both lucky to have her.

Some of the fund cash goes into the bank to pay the credit card bill for those gifts that can only be bought online. That means as soon as the purchase is made, I put that amount of cash into the bank and pay that credit card charge the same day. Typically, I round up for credit card purchases ($55.67? send 60.00) for my own personal credit card use fee.

Then I hit the streets. I put my cash in a baggie because it’s bulky on account of there are always a lot of ones and fives. I know, based on how much money I have, roughly what I’m going to spend for each person on my list. The amount varies per year depending on how much is in the fund. I’m lucky in that I live in an area where there are a lot of great locally-owned stores. I make sure I shop those places pretty much exclusively. When the money is gone, I’m done. I buy books for people I know will appreciate them. I typically get a gift card from my local independent bookseller for my nieces and nephew. I love shopping for the nieces — gifts that sparkle! Girly things! Things boys would rather die than so much as look at.

I now holiday-shop guilt free. There is no looming depression on the credit card. If I used it to buy a gift, that gift is already paid off. I can’t tell you how much easier the holidays are now.

The fun of buying cool and pretty things for the people I love is even more enjoyable because of this freedom from economic angst. I don’t always succeed in buying the perfect gift, but the point, really, is that I thought about that person. When I find the right gift, I pull out my baggie of cash and fork over the money. Done.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Here in the US it’s Thanksgiving, a day of irony and overindulgence. We will be overindulging at my brother’s house this year.

May you and all your loved ones have a wonderful day.

A new Jewel

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

He doesn’t have a name yet. I’m still mulling over possibilities. Right now, Abu is the front runner. I had to give up on calling him Sparky once I saw him. He’s not really a Sparky. He’s a blue Abyssinian, and only the second purebred cat I’ve had. I wanted a cat that was similar to my Tonkinese Jasper, who I still miss terribly. It took a while to find the right breeder and then wait for a litter. We picked him up today and he’s a total doll. Tomorrow I’ll get out the good camera and get some better pics.

Name suggestions welcome.

Vacation Update Stuff

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Yesterday we went to Times Square and environs and stopped by the Leonidas Chocolates store where I bathed in the aroma of the Best Chocolate Ever Anywhere (they deliver, it’s worth it!!) We also stopped by The Pop Tart Store. Pure Marketing Genius. OMG. I signed stock at the Grand Central Station book store which was lovely.

I had lunch with my GCP editor, got a lovely tour of the Hachette offices and recorded a Q&A and two excerpts from my paranormals and made it safely from Grand Central Station to Brooklyn all by myself.

Got a bit more writing done, but not much. More adventures today.
