Woot! for Website Updates. Plus Excerpt to the Excerpt

Monday, March 7th, 2011

I did some website updates today. Exciting stuff.

Excerpt to the Excerpt

I’m allowed to have up to 20% of the story on my website. Below is way less than 20%. the longer excerpt here is a bit shy of 20%, more like 18% but it was a really good stopping place.

Magic pressed on Mair’s heart when Dal Atul emerged from the barracks at the far side of the parade grounds. As she watched him, the sensation enfolded her, slid through her, around her, deep and mysterious. The moment of recognition, when it hit, shook her so hard her breath stopped. So hard she couldn’t hear what the others were whispering. Nothing existed except Atul, that old, savage magic, and her conviction that her life had just re-formed itself into a new and terrible shape.

This awful sense of desperation and futility had to spring from fear she told herself. What could her fast-beating pulse mean but that, like the others, she was afraid of the king’s Dragon? By reputation alone, he was not a man who would ever be the subject of romantic fantasy. Today’s tourney was for the entertainment of the Tallend delegation, but it was no accident the participants were soldiers. Dangerous soldiers. Each one chosen from among Veren’s best, including, of course, from members of the King’s Own Guard. Men such as Dal Atul

Mair Barrence, the eldest of three children, had spent the whole of her twenty-five years at the northern border. Northerners were not a soft people. How could they be, in a land where conditions crushed the weak until there was nothing left? The folk there dressed plainly, spoke plainly and did not coddle their children or their women. They could not afford to. Mair was Northern to her marrow. Thus, she confronted herself and admitted that the emotion that rocked her to her core was not fear, but the same unknowable emotion that had twisted in her since the day she set eyes on the Dragon.

Atul had been given his epithet not out of respect or fear, but because his father was one of the Dragon sept Elves. He was the result of one of the rapes that occurred during the third and final battle for control of the Tallend Province. Half-bloods who survived childhood and could pass for fully human did so. Atul had survived despite his obvious parentage.

That he’d been brought into the King’s Own Guard said a great deal about King VerenÑand yet more about Atul. The King’s Own were the elite of Veren’s army, under his private command. His personal guards were drawn from them. They had no internal rank or hierarchy; whether noble-born, baseborn, sons of whores or bastard half-bloods, they were soldiers now and for the rest of their lives. No one left the King’s Own except by dying. They were men who had been killers, intriguers, assassins, thieves and poisoners. Some, so rumor went, were even sorcerers. King Veren prized magic highly. And the men recruited into the King’s Own did whatever was necessary to protect him. They carried out his will without question or hesitation.

The gallery spectators fell silent as Atul approached. Every soldier within fifty paces, be he the King’s Own or otherwise, stopped what he was doing to watch.

Other Stuff

My son has a really rotten cold. I’m praying I don’t get it. Batman is running away with the hot sex poll, but Alexander Skarsgard is making a good showing considering he wasn’t actually a legitimate choice except in some rather lusty hearts.

No Rest for the Weary!

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

I just emailed revisions for My Dangerous Pleasure. Woot!!!!

Now I have to get cracking on The Next Historical. Blogging may be intermittent while I try to NaNoWriMo the book. If you’re participating, buddy me! I’m cjewel and I’m already behind. Except yesterday I wrote 1900 words in the revisions so I may just claim that.

Anyhow, how’s everyone? Whatcha working on, doing that’s interesting etc?

My son and I are going to NYC for a week on Friday. Should be interesting to make word count and do fun stuff, but then I won’t have to be at the day job.

I’m reading a mystery/thriller that I’m not sure I can finish. It’s getting harder and harder to suspend disbelief in re the characters. There’s a female character who is made of so many stereotypes and cliches that I think my brain might explode. I’m fascinated, though, by the number of cliche things she can say, do and think. It’s bad when you can predict action, dialogue and thought for any character. Alas.

Too Much Sex?

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Reader and fellow resident of Sonoma County SonomaLass found this written in her used copy of my historical Lord Ruin:

Oh. Well. Um. OK!

If you feel the urge now to overindulge, this might be a good time to mention again that I have my rights back on this book and hope to have it available for digital download early in the new year. I’m just waiting on my cover artist to be available. Find out more about Lord Ruin here. You can also read the first chapter.

In other news revisions for My Dangerous Pleasure are going pretty well. Just about done. And speaking of, back to it!

P.S. Yay for my San Francisco Giants!

Checking in From San Francisco

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

I am at Bouchercon but am spending most of my time in my hotel room revising. The big news is that I have attended my first Creature Party for Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. Wowza. Apparently about a month ago, publicists call the Oakland and San Francisco police departments looking for any men 6’3 or taller and 240 and muscular and told them to come on over . . . There were three such gentlemen at this event, one of whom was an Oakland Homicide cop and another who was a Lieutenant for the SF PD. I didn’t get to talk to the 3rd so can’t say. Anyway, we were to vote for the most Reacher like gentleman and I voted for “Red Reacher” (his shirt said “where’s Jack” in red) because, well, he looked like Ranger. I told him I’d voted for him for this reason and several of us had a lovely discussion with these two Jacks about the merits of Reacher vs. Ranger and we concluded that actually it would be not bad at all to be Ranger. He was quite pleased and said he would find a couple of the Stephanie Plum books and check out the fuss. Heh.

Today I attended the interview with Lee Child and then got the two Reacher books I brought with me signed by him for my father. Squeeeeee!!!! I managed, somehow, to remain almost dignified. But now I’m back in my room revising.

Check out the previous post and go leave a comment so I can send someone a free Jet Li movie…

Nose to the keyboard writing

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Am doing revisions for My Dangerous Pleasure. In a good news/bad news kind of thing, I decided to go to Bouchercon this year since it’s in San Francisco this year. Urp. I’ll be spending most of my time in the hotel room revising. But I intend to hang out at night. So, I’ll have a nice long weekend with only MacFang and a pile of energy bars for company. And a bag of nuts as once again I cannot afford hotel plus food. Well, I have a roomie for all but two of the nights so possibly not completely alone.

Back to it!

Sacrificing for One’s Art

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Today my editor emailed to let me know the art department (how I love thee, Art Department!) is working on the cover for My Dangerous Pleasure. The hero is Iskander, who among other attributes has facial tats in the form of blue five stripes down the left side of his face — actually, the stripes go all the way down his body, back to front, top to bottom. He’s cool.

My editor wanted to know if I had any images or sketches or other pics of anyone I may have had in mind. Well, unlike Patti O’Shea, I don’t assemble dossiers on my characters. I have a personality pretty firmly in mind and a totally vague idea of what they might look like — I might have definite ideas about certain features, eye color and hair color (usually) but I just don’t have any one person/model/photo etc in mind.

But my editor needed my assistance and that meant I was going to have to Google for hot men with dark hair and come up with some pictures. I know, I know. It was a trial. But Twitter to the rescue! I tweeted my dilemma and very quickly got loads of links and names. I then had the onerous task of checking out each and every one and deciding which, if any, photos evoked the spirit of Iskander.

I have sent three photos, of three different hot men with dark hair. I should probably send more.

Is Eduardo Verastequi Isander?

This picture came courtesy of @ElyssaPapa who provided the name. I have no idea who he is, but Iskander has some pain in his past and I ask you, how can you look at this picture and not think he’s seen some sadness and you need to come make it all better? Iskander is of uncertain origins (doh — he’s a DEMON) but really, the name is, if I recall, stolen from inspired by the LazyDBA list of SQL Server database administrators. During my research for my historical Indiscreet I discovered that Alexander The Great had been very busy in the Levant and the now Turkish city of Iskenderun (often pronounced and spelled by Europeans as Skanderoon) is, in fact, named after Alexander (Iskander … see where I’m going with this?) The Great. Iskander is not white for one thing . . .

How is Rufus Sewell Like Iskander?

This picture has a deeper sense of melancholia which is why I like it so well. Iskander has been hurt very very badly. I would say Sewell’s face is not quite perfect, but very close. However, Iskander isn’t depressed. He’s actually a bit of a I do my own damn thing and I don’t care if that bothers you. He says what’s on his mind even when he shouldn’t. I should have looked around for pictures where he was smiling, come to think of it. For years (lots and lots and lots of years) Iskander lived with very little contact with the human world. He didn’t need or want it because his personal life was exactly what he wanted it to be. Now that’s he’s learned, to some extent, how to pass as human and get along with his own kind, life is a bit more challenging.

Is Sendhil Rammamurthy like Iskander?

This picture would, I think, be quite amenable to blue stripes. It’s too bad his hand is in the way, but the eyes are to die for and the suggestion of “otherness” from the default white male is delicious. There’s a hint of a smile here that I quite liked. Iskander smiles a lot. Despite everything he’s been through, he’s happy.

He knows how to enjoy life; good food, good sex, Jet Li movies and he makes sure that he does as often as possible. After the break with this Blood Twin, Fen (see My Wicked Enemy) he had a hard time figuring out how to react in a different world. He’s been a sexual omnivore while he was learning how to cope with his new life, but he has a preference for women, he’s learned. He’s had one relationship that might be termed normal and he sometimes thinks he ought to pursue things with her, because they were good together. She’s in love with someone else, but seeing if her could change her mind would be worth it.

He’s been doing well passing for human, he even has a tenant. She rents out the apartment over his garage. She owns a bakery and she’s really pretty. She also doesn’t have a clue about demons or magic. There’s absolutely no reason to think that will change. Nope. Not at all.

I looked at many many other pictures, too.

I’m sharing only a very few here because, well, the honest truth is the internet here is dog slow.
Close but not Iskander-y enough. It's the goatee, I think.

I did this because I believe in putting out the best possible product. Whatever it takes.
