Announcement! Not Proper Enough Has Reverted to Me

My Regency Romance, Not Proper Enough, is now available worldwide. It turns out Not Proper Enough was reverted to me last December, which neither my agent or I knew until the paperwork arrived in her office last month. What I didn’t realize that Berkley took down their version in December, so uh-oh. The book was off sale in the US and Canada. This news is of most interest to readers in the US and Canada since Berkley Books had North American rights only and I published my own version everywhere else. Below is the “new” cover for readers in the US and Canada.

A pretty lady in Regency attire, in profile but looking at you. Yeah, you. Her long curly hair is down. She looks feisty.

Not Proper Enough

Could the wrong man be the right one after all?

Lady Eugenia Byrant doesn’t forget insults easily. Even years after the Marquess of Fenris publicly insulted her, she has no desire to let bygones be bygones. As a widow, she knows the gift of a magical medallion will never find her a second chance at love. When happiness appears to work its way back into her life, it’s Fenris who threatens her newfound peace.

The Marquess of Fenris loved Eugenia, even when she married his best friend. His feelings never changed, but now he has to convince the lady that he has. The handsome and wealthy heir to a dukedom puts on the charm, but will it be enough for her to forget his previous transgressions?

Not Proper Enough is a Regency historical romance novel for adults and about adults who actually act like adults. If you like enthralling characters, heated chemistry, and smoldering romance, then you’ll love Carolyn Jewel’s thoughtful and witty tale.

What’s Up? This!

Here’s What’s Up

Surrender to Ruin is still out for its final final final editorial read. The anthology How to Find a Duke in Ten Days is officially on sale. Readers are really responding to the stories. Mine is The Viscount’s First Kiss. If you haven’t picked up your copy, you should! Click here for my website buy links page.

Other News

I have a reversion for Not Wicked Enough. As soon as I have the reversion letter, my version of the book will be on sale world wide. Until the reversion, Berkley Books had North American rights.

What’s Next

I have several projects in the pipeline, but after a lot of thought I have reordered them. As some of you may know, Hachette Books still has the rights to the first two books in my My Immortals series. They have, to date, stood fast on refusing to revert because of outstanding sublicenses that do not expire until 2021. This severely hampers my ability to properly market the series, and that matters, a lot, to my bottom line. It’s hard to get traction with new readers when I don’t control two of the books, both of which are either no longer in print or very hard to find in print.

Therefore, I have decided to write two “replacement” books that will provide a new series lead-in to books 3-7. They are tentatively titled My Infernal Lover and Blow Back. Once both are done, I’ll have a way to effectively market the series and, hopefully, bring new readers into the series.

That does mean I am pushing back starting the new “Dark Elf” series, which is disappointing, though I am continuing to draft out my vision for for this series. My historical Not Proper Enough will likely revert sometime in the next year. Book 3 in the series remains on my project list.

Monster Mailing!

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Today, I bought mailers and took all the books that needed to be mailed to the mail store:

100 copies of My Wicked Enemy
10 copies of Not Proper Enough
10 copies (total) of Not Proper Enough and Not Wicked Enough for the RITAs
A miscellaneous other number of books that are embarrassingly late getting mailed.

My local mailing store is awesome because if I didn’t get the right number or kind of shipping materials, they will supply them. They will take care of everything. All I had to do was drop off the books and supplies.

Bliss.

If I owe you a book, it will be on its way soon!

Contracts and Rights in More Than 140 Characters

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

While I was busy at work and then grocery shopping a discussion arose regarding my historical romances and what’s being published where.

Basically, the more than 140 character version is that my publisher only bought North American rights to my historicals. My agent tried to get them to go for World rights but they weren’t interested. I knew I had the foreign rights. In fact, there was a nice handful of foreign sales by my agent

It was only after I wondered out loud to my agent why Not Wicked Enough was on sale at Amazon.co.uk only in paper and not in digital that I learned that Berkley had North American rights only: essentially, the US and Canada.  That book should not have been on sale in the UK at all. And, as it turns out when it occurred to me that I ought to check, the same was true for Scandal and Indiscreet.

So, hoo-yah! Kind of late. I self-published Scandal, Indiscreet and Not Wicked Enough in all the territories where I have rights, including the UK. I will do the same for Not Proper Enough when it releases this September.

I’m still waiting for an accounting of what I am owed for books sold in countries where my publisher did not have rights.

The odd thing is that originally, it was very disappointing that we were unable to get my publisher to buy World Rights. They just weren’t interested. Things are changing fast in the publishing business. Speaking only for myself, I’m glad to have those other rights. And, in fact, I was quite disappointed when my publisher agreed to reprint Indiscreet rather than revert the rights to me. Scandal was/is still in print.

The UK Kindle edition of Not Wicked enough is available on Amazon UK. If you are in the UK, Australia or New Zealand you can buy the Kindle version here and for less than the paper version!

It turns out I also have the UK/AUS/NZ rights to Scandal and Indiscreet. There are a few other countries where I have the rights so I’ll be adding those to the territories as well.

I need to get new covers made for Scandal and Indiscreet, so I imagine it will be a month or so before those are ready to put on sale. I believe I have final-copy digital files. Something to look forward to, eh?

Also, If you read German, the German edition of My Wicked Enemy is available for pre-order via Amazon.co.uk here. I think the German title is In the Arms of Demons but I don’t know.

Free Fall, A My Immortals Novella is Done!

Sunday, April 1st, 2012
Hot Guy, Nake Back

Cover of Free Fall

Yay!!!!! It seems like I’ve been working on this forever, getting interrupted, and coming back and finding out it needed more work. The story has been through two rounds of editing, both of which made the story even better. It’s been copy-edited and proofread. I made additional changes and tweaks while I was reading the copy I emailed to my iPad and read in the Kindle App. I got a fantastic cover from Patricia Schmidt.

Anyway, I can now say that Free Fall, A My Immortals Series novella is DONE. Buy Free Fall from Amazon.

About Free Fall

Attorney Lys Fensic has spent her life controlling a psychic power that kills. Her ability to lock herself down falls apart when her ex, a mage, sends enslaved demons to kill her. In a psychic free fall, she turns to tough guy Telos Khunbish for help. But is he a mage as she’s always suspected or is he something far more dangerous?

Free Fall is set in the My Immortals series world where demons and magic-using humans called the magekind are not quite getting along. Most people have no idea they’re living in what amounts to a magical war-zone. Free Fall is based on the short story Future Tense but is considerably expanded and includes scenes that were censored from the short story. This novella is about 35,000 words (130 pages).

I should mention the censored stuff is way hot.

Review Copy Anyone?

In the meantime, anyone who agrees to post an HONEST review of Free Fall on Amazon should leave a comment on this post. I’ll send you a .MOBI version of the file.

What I did and Why

I ended up deciding to enroll Free Fall in the KDP Select program. That means it’s exclusive to Amazon for 90 days. By July 2, I’ll be able to upload the story to the other vendors. I’ve heard some mixed things about the program, but I know I do quite well enough at the other vendors that, for the books I’ve already self-published, it didn’t make sense to remove those books from sale everywhere else. On the other hand, there’s no way for me to know if KDP Select makes sense for me without trying it. I do intend to take advantage of my 5 free days, but I’m not sure when I’ll do that. I’m a bit brain dead at the moment.

Free Fall is different enough from my other titles to make it a good test case. First, Book 5 in the series is my next project, but I won’t be done until later this year, so a three month delay in getting it to the other vendors isn’t going to hurt Book 5, which, barring some miraculous result of this test case, will be published to all vendors from the start.

Other than the short story, Future Tense, there’s no directly-related self-pubbed backlist to cross-sell with this title. I’m hoping the story will encourage sales of the series backlist. If it does, seeing an effect will be limited to Amazon, and, hopefully, easier to keep track of. And, the series backlist is with Grand Central. That means any bump in sales will garner me royalties at a vastly smaller rate, won’t be reported to me for at least 6-9 months, and will count against the advance(s). I believe by now My Wicked Enemy has earned out. Possibly My Forbidden Desire, too, based on a foreign rights sale to Germany. But I don’t know and won’t know until the next royalty period… in a few months. So, this experiment’s cost to me is, I think, fairly minimal.

I’ll report back when and if I have any salient observations about the results.

An Excerpt

CHAPTER 1

11:40 AM. Lobby of 101 California Street, San Francisco, California

He was here. Telos Kh?nbish had come. Relief nearly demolished her, it hit so powerfully. He was here, and now, improbably, she believed everything was going to be all right. Her life was irrevocably screwed, but she believed. She ignored the noise of the lobby and the man standing beside her. He was irrelevant. What a damn sad commentary it was that after nearly ten years in the city, Kh?nbish was the closest thing she had to a friend. Maybe even a real friend, because he was here, and she believed she’d get through this.

Her heart kicked up a notch when she got a clear view of his black BMW turning onto Front Street. Now, of course, she wondered if she’d made a mistake involving him. She didn’t make a habit of asking for help. She wasn’t good with people. She wasn’t even sure she’d asked right. Seems she had.

The BMW was definitely looking to park. Good thing. In less than ten minutes the lunchtime rush would start, and she’d be in real trouble. Even now, there were too many people around.

“My ride’s here,” she said to Jack, the man standing beside her. She didn’t make eye contact because that would be dangerous. Instead she stared at his tie, but that turned out to be a mistake. The dark red silk looked like blood streaming down his chest. She focused on the shiny marble floor and the tips of his Oxfords. “I’m fine. Really.”

“Let me carry your things.” Jack reached for the moving box that contained the personal contents from her office. He knew Michael, and that meant she couldn’t trust him. Simple fact. She couldn’t trust anyone who knew Michael Ford.

“No.” She gripped the box tighter and looked at the street again, as if Kh?nbish could help her from afar. The BMW was waiting for a van to pull away from the curb. Kh?nbish had never met Michael. That was part of the reason she’d called him. That, and she didn’t know anyone else.

“Lys.” Jack was thirty-ish, good looking, and in line to make partner in the next two years. He did good suit. He was a competent lawyer and a decent litigator.

She faked a smile and looked at Jack without directly meeting his eyes. Over the years, she’d gotten good at faking contact normal people never thought twice about. She lifted the box an inch. “Hardly weighs a thing.”

Jack smoothed a hand down the river of blood that was his tie. She held her breath, half expecting his palm to come away smeared red. He reached for her moving box, and she jumped back, heart slamming against her chest. Either Jack didn’t get it, or he was in league with Michael and meant her harm. He kept moving toward her.

“Don’t.” The word came out sharp and loud. The security guard at the lobby reception area looked over. She was close to losing it. Way too close. Blocking shouldn’t be this hard for her, but the last several days had been…difficult. Not enough sleep. Not enough to eat. Too much caffeine. Far too much stress.

“Lys. Come on.” His tie vibrated at the edges of her vision. Blood red. A river of red. He reached for the box again. “I’m only trying to help out.”

She risked a look at his face. His smile was hesitant, a little irritated, but that would be normal if he really just wanted to help. Just a regular person trying to be nice. Part of her didn’t believe it. He knew Michael, and Michael had tried to kill her.

Update Palooza

Monday, March 19th, 2012

March 20th is the last day to enter the Goodreads drawing for a copy of Not Wicked Enough. You can enter from my blog.

Mostly I’m head-down nose to the keyboard. I’m doing one more revision of the Future Tense novella. Then I finish the historical anthology. Then I start book 5 of the My Immortals series. And somewhere in there I put out the UK etc eBook of Not Wicked Enough. It’s a lot of work.

And now, back to work. If you know a good joke, or even a bad one, share in the comments.

Progress Report – Not Proper Enough and More

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

I have the edits for Not Proper Enough so I have my head down working on them. They’re actually very light, but this is my best chance to make sure I said what I meant and to make sure there’s emotional punch. This means I’m behind on Dauntless, my story for the Midnight Scandals anthology, but I’m sort of OK with that because I’d reached what I believe is critical mass with that story in that all the elements were gelling and I can now dig in and do yeoman’s work on story.

I also discovered that I have the UK rights to Not Wicked Enough and Not Proper Enough and that means I am currently commissioning new covers for both those books so I can release them in the UK. Not Wicked Enough will be out as soon as I’m ready. Not Proper Enough will, of course, will be a later release.

I’m getting antsy about starting Harsh Marit’s story for the next My Immortals book.

Back to work!

Interesting Fact About Not Wicked Enough

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Unless someone tells me it’s safe, I don’t read reviews of my current releases. It does no good to my writer’s psyche.

I have heard (without reading any reviews or comments to same) however, that some people are disappointed that Not Wicked Enough is not an angsty book like the previous two.

Well, in a way, me, too, though I’m pretty pleased with NWE. Angst is my natural style, I think. But if I had not proposed going with a “lighter” historical than Scandal and Indiscreet, I would not have had a contract to write any more historicals. That’s just a fact that is directly tied to sales.
